Once again, thank you for all that you do. Thank you for teaching the right mindset. Thank you for teaching the moves. While i understand the principle, I'm the kind of guy who would suffer "paralysis by analysis" if I were in a situation and didn't have some moves or techniques in my mind already. I'm a thinker more than a doer. I'm not going to move instinctually because my brain works in a way where analysis overcomes instinct much of the time. I've practiced the initial cane thrust so many times that my "analysis" now goes to the cane thrust immediately. Would I perform that thrust well in a real scenario? I hope I never find out. On the other hand, a part of me feels that all of us are going to face violence, and if it it must come, a part of me wishes that it would come and be done instead of me having to anticipate that situation for the rest of my life. Whether my second move would be a two-handed wooden bar smash directly into my attacker or a two-handed cane tip swing from the outside would depend on how close the attacker is. I've practiced both quite a bit. I think my "analysis" has reached a point that I wouldn't sit around deciding. One or the other is coming. I don't have depth perception, so I might make the wrong move. At least I'll make it with commitment. Thank you for introducing me to Tim Miller. His work on UA-cam is also very important. A couple of years ago, I slipped on the ice and pulled my groin muscle pretty badly. While I understand that you mean an attack to the genitals when you talk about a groin strike, I became painfully aware that injury to that muscle would slow someone. If I somehow caused my attacker to have that kind of strain in his groin muscle, I might actually be able to get away from an attacker. I'm horribly slow, but if someone were dealing with that pain in that part of the leg, he might become slower than I am long enough for me to escape. Are you familiar with the Police Magnum line of pepper defense products? Another creator mentioned them recently. I'm toying with the idea of getting some pepper spray. I have carried various spray products at times in the past. Before my health failed, I had bear spray for hiking, and I still have a big canister of bear spray somewhere. I need to spray it away because it's so old. I understand that many vendors won't deal with PO Box addresses because so many people commit fraud through those addresses. Unfortunately, this policy by TeeSpring keeps me from ordering another of your shirts from them. My only billing address is a PO Box because my town doesn't offer home mail delivery. If you are still doing mail-in video training, I might try that. I haven't forgotten that idea. I've just been chasing other things. I'm also not good with video cameras or editing.

Matt, I hope people realize that you just gave them information that could save their miserable lives. Some people talk about muscle memory and with sticks/canes/staff or whatever, it's gonna take some practice and self training to be able to be effective. That and hope that they never find themselves in a situation where they have to use it.

Thank you Matt. You're right, anything can be a weapon if you practice with it. You don't want to break your hands or fingers throwing punches. Let the stick or the cane do the work, you be the guide.

how effective do you think the first move would be against a trained foe? I believe it is a very easy way to loose the Shillelagh.... you are offering the hammer part.... the one who grab a hold of this part, keeps the shillelagh.

I made my own walking stick using an oak dowel from Home Depot. You might want to make your own walking stick and then buy an inexpensive cane. That might let you try both to see which one you like. You could then spend more on getting a nice version of the one that seemed to be a better fit for your personal style, situation, and abilities.

I walk with my hickory stick. Mashing it against concrete, asphalt, dirt, paint, (s sort of finished concrete?). Mushrooms the stick. That effort you cannot buy. Coat it with more oil! I heard hickory was good. I will be very disappointed if it cracks when I fight a live oak. I'd like to be surprised.

I have low ceilings in my apartment, so when practicing I have to avoid spins that go high, with the nunchucks or jo staff. I'll say one thing for the foam practice chucks, they save on your furniture. One time I was practicing with wood nunchucks and accidently smashed a lamp. I was very embarrassed. I learned the nunchucks starting in the 70s training at a Wado-Ryu karate dojo.

Hi Matt, good to see you. Sorry i missed class. One thing not mentioned often is removing the rubber boot cap at the of the cane. Removing the rubber boot, as you have mentioned, increases the force the squared off end has. I have also been practicing using my blackthorn shillelagh on the heavy bag for speed, and power strikes with the leaded root ball. Stay safe. Doug.

Any Canadians or anti-2A state residents watching, if you can't get mace, then get a can of hornet spray, the kind that shoots out a long narrow spray. Keep it in the house somewhere you can grab quick. It will ruin an attackers day.

I have got to say ! , the " Live Comments" are becoming annoying/ entertaining ..... Sensei Matt , great lesson and I am getting better at the techniques that you and I trained in. I like the " off the shoulders strike ..I typically have two canes that I am training with..I also like to keep a distance between me and the threat. I also like the great cardiovascular workout that I am getting from my training.. I also like your " Home Safety " advice ; I use my canes " Derby Style " handle under the door handle , it works as a " Door Brake " bar. Great lesson Sensei , Thank You.

Some of Your techniques are perfect extensions of the Bo techniques that I have practiced for many years.
